Irene Gosselink performed her bachelor in Biotechnology, at Wageningen University.

Thereafter she moved to Utrecht, where she studied the master Cancer, Stem Cells and Developmental Biology (CSND). After she finished her master in January 2019, she worked for 1.5 years as a researcher in oncology. During this time she was working with patient-derived 2D and 3D models to study cell-cell interactions and molecular mechanisms behind osteosarcoma (bone cancer). Since July 2021, she is working as a PhD student at Maastricht University. In her current PhD, her research focusses on the possibility of microplastics to cross the epithelial border and assessing the toxicity of these particles on epithelial cells. For this, she is using various (advanced) in vitro models composed of airway and intestinal epithelium.

Her PhD is conducted in collaboration with TNO (The Netherlands Organisation for applied scientific research) and falls within the Momentum project, funded by ZonMw and Health~Holland. https://momentummicroplastics.nl/
