Dr GJM (Gertjan) den Hartog (Harderwijk, The Netherlands, 1973) studied Chemistry at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam with Medicinal Chemistry (Major: Molecular Pharmacology (Role of tachykinins in ozone toxicity, supervised by Prof A Bast, Dr. HJM Van Hoof, Dr. HP Voss, minor: Organic synthesis (Synthesis of dual leukotriene/histamine antagonists, supervised by Dr. MQ Zhang, Dr M Zwaagsta) as specialization. His doctoral thesis had the Diazepam receptor as topic and was written under the supervision of Prof H Timmerman. After graduation, he moved to Maastricht to study the cardioprotective properties of chemically modified superoxide dismutase enzymes (PC-SOD) during doxorubicin treatment. This research project resulted in a PhD thesis (promotores: Prof A Bast and Prof WJF van der Vijgh, co promotor: Dr GRMM Haenen). Currently, his research interest are the role of superoxide radicals in health and disease and the identification/quantification of metabolites using quadrupole Time-of-Flight mass spectrometry
