Maastricht University is at the forefront of research on sustainable medication use, addressing both environmental exposures with drugs and prescribing practices. We are investigating the presence of pharmaceutical residues in hospital wastewater and their environmental impact. Simultaneously, the university is developing educational initiatives to equip future prescribers with the knowledge to make sustainable therapy choices. The research also explores ways to reduce medication wastage and promote effective use of drugs. By combining wastewater management strategies with sustainable prescribing practices, Maastricht University is working towards a more environmentally conscious approach to healthcare.
